ESO 378-1 – це планетарна туманність в сузір’ї Гідри, яку астрономи між собою називають «Південна Сова». Як і інші подібні їй об’єкти, ESO 378-1 – щодо короткоживучі освіту. Вона може проіснувати всього кілька десятків тисяч років, що для звичайної зірки зовсім не термін.

Кращий на сьогодні знімок залишку вмираючої зірки ESO 378-1 був отриманий за допомогою Дуже Великого Телескопа – комплексу з чотирьох окремих телескопів, розташованого в Паранальской обсерваторії.
